Castellar de n'Hug

Castellar de n'Hug

Castellar de n’Hug is situated on the southern slopes of the Molina mountains and the Creueta pass, in the extreme north-east of the county and bordering on Ripollès and La Cerdanya. The municipality occupies an extensive and extremely rugged territory, with elevations as high as those of the Rus mountain (2,113 m), Pleta Roja mountain (2,031 m), the Serra de Moreu (1,559 m) and the Serra de Montderm (1,530 m). The Llobregat river has its source in this municipality, in an extraordinarily beautiful spot that receives many visitors. The entire municipality falls within the confines of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.

The village of Castellar de n’Hug is centred around the Romanesque church of Santa Maria. As a very typical example of villages of this kind, Castellar de n’Hug has developed a tourism infrastructure that has become one of the mainstays of the local economy. Other economic sectors in the area include animal husbandry, in particular cattle and, to a lesser extent, dryland farming of mainly potatoes, cereals and fodder.

In the 13th century, the noblemen of Mataplana encouraged the settlement of this village which, over the years, has managed to maintain its mountain character, with cobbled streets and stone houses.

Awarded the title of one of the prettiest towns in Spain in 1984, the surrounding area also has very interesting sights: the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç de Rus, with reproductions of Romanesque and 14th century paintings inside the chapel dedicated to Santa Magdalena; and the Clot del Moro factory, an impressive building by Rafael de Gustavino that is now home to the Cement Museum and which can be reached by taking the Cement Train.

A key annual event is the International Catalan Sheepdog Trials in August. During the rest of the year a visit to the fascinating Shepherd’s Museum is highly recommended. Also well worth a visit is the source of the Llobregat, the Llobregat Springs.
